Time
TELLING TIME
The expression what time is it? in Italian is che ore sono? (literally "which hours are they?"), but also the singular form che ora è? is used.
1:20 É la una e venti It's twenty after one
4:15 Sono le quattro e un quarto It's a quarter after four
3:45 Sono le quattro meno un quarto It's a quarter before four
10:30 Sono le dieci e mezza It's half past ten
12:55 É la una meno cinque It's five (minutes) to one
1:50 Sono le due meno dieci
É la una e cinquanta
It's ten before two

At 15 minutes before or after the hour, quarto ("a fourth") is commonly used instead of quindici ("fifteen"). Likewise, at 30 minutes after an hour, mezza ("half") is commonly used instead of trenta ("thirty"). Mezza is never used with meno.

To indicate A.M., add di mattina to the hour; to indicate P.M., add del pomeriggio (12 P.M. to 5 P.M.), di sera (5 P.M. to midnight), or di notte (midnight to early morning) to the hour.
